When Jahm and his followers began to say "Allaah is in every place" in their response to the Atheist Indian Materialist Philsophers called the Sumaniyyah after their attempts to prove the existence of a creator to these Atheists using a proof devised from the metaphysics of the Greek Philosophers such as Aristotle - the Salaf stood to refute, expose, confute, disgrace and humiliate these Jahmites. And thus from their sayings was that "Allaah is above His Throne,
separate and distinct (baa'in) from His creation". And their intent behind this was to establish that it is Allaah Himself who is above the Throne, whilst noting also that the Throne is a true and real created entity and not a metaphor. As for the Jahmiyyah and all the Mutakallimoon (speculative theologians) then because they used the metaphysical notions and language to argue for Allaah's existence, they were forced in turn to adhere to that language in describing Allaah and to abandon what is in the Book and the Sunnah, and from that was their saying that "Allaah is not in a a place" and they said this because from the incidental attributes of bodies, according to Aristotle's "Ten Categories" (
al-Maqoolaat al-Ashar), is "place". Because their proof for Allaah's existence was based on notions that were derived from Aristotle's "Ten Categories", they were forced to deny Allaah is above His Throne, above the seven heavens, as is clear and explicit in the texts and then to start inventing ta'weels to take away these clear manifest verses away from how the Salaf understood them.
